Frequently Asked Questions
What does a psychological or psychoeducational evaluation include?
These evaluations are comprehensive assessments of your child’s strengths and areas of growth. Evaluations start with a review of records and interview(s). The extent of the records and interview(s) depends on the case. Observations in academic or non-academic settings may be warranted in some cases. Formal testing in a one-on-one setting will also be conducted. The types of tests will depend on your child’s unique needs. Lastly, all evaluations include a feedback session. In this session, I will review the evaluation results with you. I strive to provide the information in a way that empowers you to change your child’s future.
What is the difference between a psychological and psychoeducational evaluation?
Psychological and psychoeducational evaluations provide different types of information. Psychoeducational evaluations are most beneficial for understanding issues related to schooling. These evaluations may help you understand your child's learning needs, including research-based interventions to improve their academic performance and accommodations to support how your child learns. On the other hand, a psychological evaluation does not have to include difficulties with academic performance, such as ADHD or major depressive disorder. Either way, the evaluation is tailored to meet your needs.
How do I obtain an independent educational evaluation?
An independent educational evaluation, or IEE, is a comprehensive evaluation made at the request of a parent, attorney, or school district. An IEE is conducted by a professional outside the public agency, such as your child’s school district or public charter school. IEE’s are requested when there is a disagreement between the public agency and the parent on an evaluation conducted by the public agency. The public agency must provide information about where you may obtain an IEE. You do not have to use an individual on the list; however, the individual must be qualified, such as Dr. Jared Izumi. These evaluations are typically paid at the public expense.
What is snapshot evaluation?
A snapshot evaluation is a brief overview of key areas related to your child’s functioning in intelligence and/or academic achievement. These evaluations are a good option if you are not concerned with a diagnosis, if your child had a previous evaluation and you want a second assessment, or if you’re not sure if a comprehensive evaluation is right for your child. During the evaluation process, you may be contacted regarding concerns for further evaluation. Further evaluation will only be conducted with your consent. The cost for further evaluation will be charged at the scheduled price for the type of service (see below).
